Hackney Parks

These are the best parks to visit when selling, buying, renting or letting a property within Hackney.

When you think of Hackney, green open spaces isn’t normally the first thing that comes to mind. But did you know Hackney is actually home to the largest expanse of green spaces in Inner London?

From vast recreational grounds to small, leafy hideaways, Hackney’s parks hold seventeen Green Flag awards between them. It all adds up to a lot of space where you can relax in the sun, play a game of football with friends, walk the dog, or sit and take in the gorgeous nature and wildlife.

With so many amazing parks to choose from, we pick our top 5 (in no order as we couldn’t choose!).

Victoria Park

Stretched along the south side of Hackney, Victoria Park is historically one of the most popular parks in London, and for good reason. This massive 86-hectare space boasts playgrounds, cafés, a skate park, sports facilities and a wealth of history.

In Victoria Park you can curl up with a book in an alcove that was once part of the historic London Bridge, play a game of cricket on summer evenings, watch a Regatta held by the world's oldest model boat club or go angling in a Victorian public bath.

London Fields

London Fields is one of Hackney's busiest parks. It is classified as common land due to its historical roots as a site for grazing animals. The park has large grassy spaces surrounded by London plane trees. It also includes playing areas, tennis courts, a cafe and the London Fields Lido as well as a children's paddling pool. Designated BBQ areas are available and extremely popular in the summer.

In general, this is one of the busier parks and on sunny days you could mistake it for Glastonbury.

Shoreditch Park

There's no doubt about it, Shoreditch Park is just plain fun.

How many parks have an outdoor amphitheatre with theatre and cinema screenings and an adventure playground? Or how about London's only outdoor beach volleyball court? With basketball, tennis and football facilities as well there's lots to do, but also plenty of space to relax and do nothing if that's more your speed.

Shoreditch Park is also home to 'Boulder', one of two pieces of gigantic climbable granite in Hackney created by local sculptor John Frankland. The Boulder stands at four metres high and weighs in at around 100 tonnes, and was made to be climbed on!

Hackney Marshes

Hackney Marshes is an area of open space in London's Lower Lea Valley, lying on the western bank of the River Lea. It takes its name from its position on the eastern boundary of Hackney.

It is internationally known as the spiritual home of Sunday league football, with 82 football, rugby and cricket pitches providing a base for all ages to participate in sport.

There is a circular walk that explores the rivers, woods and nature reserves with nice waterside footpaths following the River Lea and the Lea Canal.

Millfields Park

Popular with families, dog walkers and exercisers alike, Millfields Park is a hidden gem, just waiting to be explored. Locals love to spend time here enjoying nature and the company of family and friends. If you want to get out in nature during your apart hotel stay in Stratford this is a great place to burn off some energy.

If you're looking for a little more entertainment or activity, there are two children's playgrounds in different areas of the park and a trim trail, tennis courts, football pitch, athletics track, basketball court and cricket pitch. Chances are if you visit at the weekend you'll be able to watch a local match in action. There are even free fitness sessions for adults and play sessions for children at various times of the year.

Millfields Park is also licensed for events such as films and live music so you may be able to catch a performance in action, particularly during the summer months. This tree-lined park is well worth a visit in any season, take in the beauty of the frost on the ground, enjoy the riot of autumn leaves swirling in the breeze, sunbathe or have a BBQ in the summer and look out for explosions of colour as the park comes into bloom in spring.
